Please take note of the following updates and details on the sudoku challenge:

Hi JCC members! =)

JCC elections will be coming soon, so do watch out for updates on the blog as we will be uploading most of the important information here! =)

We're sorry for the delay in the uploading of the exco application form as there are still some minor details to be ironed out, but here's some FAQ for you to read first!

Is it necessary for me to be able to speak Japanese in order to run for exco?

Nope, it's not necessary at all, though of course, it would come in handy. =) But it won't affect your chances of getting in, so don't worry!

How will the elections be carried out?

The 10/11 exco will first conduct a short interview with all of the exco applicants, but it's nothing to worry about. =) It's just to get a better idea of your vision for the CCA, and of your personality.

A general vote will be carried out during either the second last or last CCA session (dates are tentative!) before the June holidays. All members who are present will get to vote. =) The exco will then tabulate the results, which should be out on the day itself.

Must I campaign, or do something to that extent?

Simply put, all exco nominees will be requested to present a speech (about 1 to 2 minutes) to the entire CCA on elections day. Visual aids and any other materials can be used to aid in your speech, if you should wish to do so. Publicity ICs might want to bring sample artworks to show the CCA, though this is also, voluntary, of course. These requirements are subject to changes, but it's not likely that much will change.

Hi all!

We'll be visiting the Japanese Creative Centre next Tuesday, 19 April!

There will be an exhibition named "Singa-planet", which features Japanese artist Yamaguchi Akira.

FAQs

Q: What do we do at JCC?

A: We have an alternate week plan whereby we will have fun activities (cooking, yukata-wearing, ikebana, taiko, movie-screenings, origami etc etc) one week and Japanese lessons conducted by your very own seniors the other! =) =)

Q. Do I need to be able to understand and speak Japanese to join JCC?

A: Nope, that's not a requirement at all! Our only condition is that you are interested in the Japanese culture. The Japanese lessons are actually split into two classes, the beginner and the intermediate so that you can learn at your own pace! =)

Q. What days are JCC on?

A: JCC sessions are held once a week, every Tuesday from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. =)

Q. Can I join more than one CCA?

A: Yes, you can. =) The school advises a maximum of 2 CCAs though.

Q. Can JCC be a first CCA?

A: Yes, JCC can be a first CCA, or a second CCA as well, depending on how many CCAs you are taking.

Q. What is the attendance requirement for JCC?

A: We require a 75% attendance rate, or else you risk getting removed from JCC o.O

Q. I am unable to attend the trial session on Tuesday; can I still join JCC?

A: Yes, that won't be a problem. All you have to do is email us your name, class, contact number and email address and indicate that you wish to join.

And the most IMPORTANT ONE!

Q. How do I join JCC?

A: You may indicate your interest to us during Tuesday's trial session, or simply send us an email at hwachongjcc@gmail.com indicating your wish to join JCC and leave your name, class, contact number (preferably handphone) and email address. It's that simple! =)

The venue for the trial session will be confirmed asap, so please do check back at this blog often, or your emails or handphones! =)

Taiko Lessons!

Hi everyone! =)

JCC will be holding taiko lessons (which should be fully subsidised so you don't have to pay at all) during the Nov/Dec holidays this year in conjunction with next year's plans to introduce taiko as a permanent long-term activity of our CCA.

There are a few aims and goals and objectives but we won't go into detail here. Basically it's to promote cultural interaction firsthand. We'll be aiming to do small performances too, so please work hard! =) The instructor will be from Hibikiya, and you can go to their website to read up more about them if you're interested: http://www.hibikiya.com.sg

The dates for the taiko lessons will be arranged according to the dates you're free. Each lesson lasts 1 and a half hours, and there will be two lessons. To summarise the lesson, each begins with warm-ups, then followed by repeats of some simple ways to play the taikos.

Please choose the dates you are available, and indicate in your email to us if you are free in the morning or afternoon or both. Do pick at least two. (We won't be having the lessons for the whole week, just on any of the days within the period specified for each option.) If you're super busy, then just pick the period that you're MOST free.

Intrinsic Elegance of Japanese Dance

The origin of Nihon Buyo (Japanese Dance) can be traced back to the 8th century. Through history, it has been developed into various refined forms closely linked with important Japanese traditional performing arts such as Kagura, Noh, Kabuki and Bunraku. Master NISHIKAWA Minosuke with his troupe will introduce the essence of Nihon Buyo through two public performances and a talk with demonstration. Two well-known Nihon Buyo plays entitled “Suisen-Tanzen” and “Tomoyakko” will be performed on each night.

Break from CCA sessions due to promos

Hellos people!
Sad to say... there won't be CCA sessions during this period of time as it's time for us to start studying for promos :( So... Good luck and jiayou mugging on your tuesdays now! All the best ^-^~ Hope you all had fun during the JCC sessions and had fun during the japanese lessons :D The exco would also like to say a big sorry for disappointing you all during the trial session x.x But even though we didn't get to try the okonomiyaki, but at least we had fun with the green tea and ice cream eh :X We're still trying to get the hang of this, but we promise the next session will be better! But with that said... There are a few issues we need to address:

Attendance
Please be reminded that you should be attending JCC sessions unless you have a valid reason, and please remember to give your MCs/letters to Wan Ting in advance(latest one day after the day of absence, late excuses will not be entertained), thank you! Please make an effort to come! (: On a side note, please inform Wan Ting if you are not getting the smses from her regarding CCA stuff, or if you are not sure about your attendance. Please also remember that you need to have at least 80% attendance! ^-^ Thanks~

Yep you got it right! A ~~secret stash~~ collection of wonderful japanese CDs, movies and books available exclusively to JCC members! We're in the midst of trying to catalogue the new, but don't worry, you'll soon be able to borrow these stuff ;)! We’re still in the midst of discussing the details, but here are some general rules:
Record your name and contact number down and the item borrowed
Return it during a CCA session, and contact an exco member should there be any problems
There will be fines for overdue items, so please take note of the due dates!
Please keep the items in good condition :D

JLPT – Japanese Language Proficiency Test
The following are some details for those who are interested in taking JLPT:
Test Date: Sunday, 5 December 2010
Registration Period: 10 August to 9 September 2010
(from Mon to Fri, 2.30pm - 8.00pm, closed on Sat, Sun & public holidays)
Application Procedure:
2 recent passport-size photos are required for registration.
The application form is chargeable at $2.00 per set.
Test Fee: Level N1: $55 / N2: $55 / N3: $55 / N4: $45 / N5: $45.
Submit your application personally at the Japanese Cultural Society.

Hello everyone! :D

Hope you're all excited about this Thursday, 10 June :D NIJI CAMP 2010 :D It's gonna be a great day of not just interacting with children but also sharing with them our passion for the Japanese culture :D This is also JCC's first ever SL project (as a whole club) since its founding back in 2008! Anyway, here are some important details about it...

1. VENUE
Club Rainbow is located at Blk 538 Upper Cross Street #05 - 263. Its a blue HDB at the back of Chinatown Point. If you are coming from the MRT, you can use Exit E, then go thru between the mall and Singapore Handicraft Centre. Please refer to the map you have been emailed or check out gothere.sg :)

2. TIME
Please report and take attendance with Crystal at 8.30am. Those doing Icebreakers, PLEASE BE PREPARED as your "item" is the first :)

3. PROGRAMME
If you are still unsure of what's to happen that day, please refer to the proposal you have been sent via email. There will be a more detailed action plan coming your way soon, so look out for that too :) Meanwhile do read through the proposal so you have an idea of what's going to happen and also so you can help facilitate the games and all :)

4. YOUR ROLES
You should already be in committees with an exco member(s) in charge of your group. If you have NO GROUP, please reply asap so we can assign you one! Currently I have these people who I am not sure whose comm they are in (partially because Crystal lost her group's name list :/):

- Chen Ningjia
- Cindy Fu

On the day itself, you will also be split into smaller groups to take care of separate groups of children. As of now, the number of children has still not been confirmed by the organisation :/ So we will let you know your groupings as soon as we can finalise the number of children too :) You will be in charge of that group of children and will accompany them throughout the camp, except when you are taking charge of the activity your comm is in charge of :) Don't worry, we will arrange it such that the people in your group will be from different comms so there will always be someone with the kids from your group :)

5. LUNCH
Please bring enough money for lunch. We will buy it for you, but you will need to pay for it :) It'll just be something simple like chicken rice or macdonald's mcchicken, so bring about $3-4 for it :) If you have any dietary requirements like can't eat chicken, vegetarian, can't eat vegetables (like Crystal), please let Crystal know :)

We will see if we can claim for this amount (in which case we would reimburse you) but for the time being just take it that you'll be paying for your own lunch :)

6. THINGS TO BRING
- Action plan (will be sent at a latter date), proposal (1 copy each)
- Any logistics for whatever you are in charge of
- Money for lunch
- Waterbottle
- Sweets/tidbits for the kids (up to you)
- Camera (up to you)

7. ATTIRE
Please wear your fac tee (standardisation yes, and colourful!) and hwa chong shorts :) Wear covered shoes!

For the coming tuesday, please prepare a 1 minute speech to introduce yourself, why you want to be an exco member etc. After everyone has made their speech, there will be questions posted by the senior exco and also from the rest of the club, and voting will be after that. Results will also be released at the end of the day.

The line-up for the speech will be by random, and you will be cut off after 1 minute, as we do not have enough time.

What is origami? Origami is the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD and was popularized in the mid-1900s. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.

hmm... considering the above, seems like our origami is not very successful, since the hippo needed to be cut, and they were all flat in the end.=.= but nevertheless, great works below :D

Sado (茶道): Japanese Tea Ceremony a.k.a the Way of Tea, involving the ceremonial preparetion and presentation of maccha (抹茶）. Tea gatherings (茶会)is a relatively simple course of hospitality that includes the services of confections, thin tea (薄茶), and sometimes a light meal (点心). Another classification of tea gathering, 茶事, is a more formal gathering, which usually includes a full-course meal, followed by confections, thick tea and thin tea. This usually lasts up to 4 hours.

Ikebana (生け花)：Flower Arrangement
A disciplined art form bringing nature and humanity together. Often emphasizes areas of the plant, such as its stems and leaves, and draws emphasis toward shape, line, form.

Hello, as all of you might know, the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is a Japanese language test held every year all over the world. It will be conducted in Singapore by the Japanese Cultural Society, Singapore.

This year, it will be held on 6 December (Sunday). It used to be held at the Japanese schools (including the Primary school, where if you were super unlucky you would get super short tables meant for 7-year-olds :D) in Singapore, but last year it was held at Nanyang Girls' High School and another location which I forgot (NJC? NUS? I took my Level 3 at NYGH so I can't remember the other place :P), so it's likely it will be those venues again ^^

You can get more info on the JLPT itself at The Japan Foundation or check your level of knowledge at a site like JLPTStudy.com.

By the way, the test comprises a Listening Compre, and lots of MCQ for Reading Compre, Grammar and Vocab :) Beware, the listening compre (and well, everything else too) is usually administered by someone who doesn't speak Japanese. My invigilator happily started collecting the scripts during the interval between the first and second halves of the Listening. And he lagged so much we were like 2 passages behind all other classrooms and couldn't hear the last 2 passages well because the head invigilator was making an announcement over the PA system and people, having finished the test, were making noise outside...

Anyways...

Yup yup! Do hurry and register especially if you don't want the hassle of going all the way down to Midland House which is a super obscure building that is sandwiched between 2 other buildings and hence really hard to find, and standing in line behind throngs of people also wanting to sign up, filling up the form while standing, with a pen that doesn't work that great, and people pushing past you, in a really narrow room where you don't even have enough room to open and read the test guide properly to figure out what the code for "English" is, and fighting for attention at the counter when Singaporeans, being Singaporeans, kiasu as they are, cut queue and just keep cutting in front of you when clearly you were there first... Meaning, go sign up online. Much, much easier :D

Hi people... as most of you all know, we just had our takoyaki session on tuesday. hope everyone enjoyed it:)

Hello everyone!^^

Today was the first lesson since JCC restarted after June hols + blocks + H1N1! :D And it will also be the last lesson until after Promos! :D BUT there is still CCA next week okay, please don't サボる (pon), because we have something in store for you :D 秘密だよ、ひ・み・つ！！！:DD

Anyway here is a brief (sort of) summary of today's lessons :D

JLPT 4 (Beginner's Class)
We went through the first 2 rows (あ/A and か/Ka) of the most basic Japanese writing system, Hiragana (平仮名). Remember to revise (the vocab too!) and do your homework (practice the さ/Sa row!) :D Here's a chart with animations to help you along ^^

Hello people,
here are some important announcements that have been made during JCC session today (21 July 2009).

#1 Changes to the lesson arrangement
We will be split into 2 different groups (according to your japanese language proficiency) and 2 concurrent sessions will be conducted during lessons.
This is to facilitate our learning as the different classes will cater to members with different (japanese) language proficiency. In other words, there will be a BASIC and ADVANCED class (nvm the names, you get what i mean :D)
However, only expect this arrangement to be in place after promos.

#2 Schedule
Weekly JCC sessions will continue till 4 August (Tues), which is the last JCC session before promos. Meanwhile, it will alternate between lessons and activities, so what's up next week:
LESSONS! basically to reinforce what has been taught earlier this year.
After promos, CCA will commence on 27 October (Tues).

#3 Attendance
You are only excused from JCC sessions if you have a valid reason (i.e. able to produce MC or excuse letter).
Please inform Crystal beforehand (refer to contact list for her number) if you are unable to turn up for CCA and make sure you submit a MC/excuse letter by the next JCC session. DON'T MAKE HER CHASE AFTER YOU!
Also, be sure to let us know if you are going to be late as well.
Your regular attendance is and will be much appreciated (:

For the benefit of those who have missed today's session, we watched 君にしか聞こえない (Kimi ni shika kikoenai) which means 'Only you can hear' OR 'Can only hear you'!

Okay haii everyonez, the exco elections were concluding during the club session on the 19th of May! As a result of the (completion of the) aforementioned elections, we now you 2 new issues on our hands!

First and foremost, the 'our hands' is no longer our hands ,its now YOURS :D
The significance in this conjecture/development in events means that as of this moment, the graduating batch of the executive committe of the Japanese Cultural Club has now (at least explicitly) passed on the responsibilities of managed the JCC to a new batch of bosses!

Speaking of which, we have yet to formally/in an online manner introduced the new members of the exco for the year 09-10.

*The election is conducted on a normal Tuesday club session. All members have to be present to vote, attendance will be taken.

**Election will commence promptly at 4.15pm. ExCo candidates are required to report to the classroom latest by 4.10pm (if lesson ends at 4.00pm)

Instructions for ExCo Candidates:
1. Prepare a short speech no more than 2 minutes. No restrictions to content. Anything that can win the heart of the club members.

2. Q&A session after all the speech. Each candidate will take a maximum of 3 questions (from the floor and current ExCo)

Members and ExCo candidates will cast their votes after Q&A session.
Each person is entitled to 6 votes each.

The votes will be counted immediately after the voting.
Outcome of the 2nd JCC ExCo will be announced on the same day.

1. MATSURI
This is going to be our first big event, EVER. For those who weren't here, and/or don't know what I am going on about, it's a japanese festival/event thing that we will be organising in school on the 17th of May! That is very soon, yes I know. As such we will require your fulllll attention, cooperation and participation.

The event is going to be made up of smaller activities and stalls throughout the day, e.g. getting takoyaki to be sold in the canteen, movie screening in the afternoon. A more in-depth post on the Matsuri will be up soon.

We have a few sub-committees, including the programmes comm, the publicity comm and the logistics committee. Once again, a more detailed post is forthcoming. In any case, we have called for volunteers for the event, and we greatly appreciate the people who have risen to the challenge. Want to help, but didn't volunteer? Don't worry, because we will need people to help with a) the banner, and b) the manning of the stalls/ the carrying of equipment, etc.

Bottom line is, this is important!!! Please involve yourself where you can : )

2. Lessons
We have had some lessons so far. Owing to the great disparity in the level of Japanese in the club, our greatest challenge is finding a level that is fun and simple for everyone. Please give us feedback on how we are doing!!

3. Activities
This is what is coming up next after lessons. For those who don't know, we have split you guys up into groups to organise the next four activity sessions. Our aim is simple: we want everyone to be involved in the activity, because it isn't the Exco's CCA; it's your CCA first of all. The groups are required to plan, organise and execute the activity in a given time slot. We want you to have a hand in shaping the personality of JCC, so please give it your all! The groupings and time slots are as follows:

28 Apr: Shu Fen's Group
05 May: Lay Ting's Group
12 May: Sarah's Group
26 May: Cheng Kiat' Group

4. EXCO elections
There we go, the big four letter word. Anyone interested? Exco elections are coming soon, so to all the J1s reading this, please think about whether or not you would like to commit to being the backbone of JCC. More details (on the positions, and what they require of you) soon.
